Help Build Our TWEP-IT Shop
The Talitha Women Empowerment Program-Information Technology (TWEP-IT)
is a computer literacy, desktop publishing and internet cafe in one which is
just one of the 19 programs of the Women Empowerment.
The Program basically aims to teach computers to Talithans (women beneficiaries
of the Talitha Foundation) to be able to upgrade their livelihood source
and be uplifted and be a better provider, a better Filipino. Most have not
even reached 6th grade but we believe that with proper training, they will know
how to do desktop publishing and even create web pages.
It's a BIG dream of the Foundation but we believe we have the talent to do it.
We have the desire to make it happen. What we don't have is the money,
equipment, and supplies to go about fulfilling this dream.
Filipinos are basically poor because we lack education. We lack education
because it is costly. Most stop schooling even in grade school because the
children have to help find food for the family. That is why these children
have grown up having their own family but live as laundrywomen and house
helpers. Their children tend to go to the same direction. So it will just
normally go on and on and on to the succeeding generations. That is why
the slums never decrease in population--because they know and have accepted
that it is their life, their destiny, hopeless, just living day to day
without foreseen future.
It is not enough that you give them fish because it will only last for a
few hours or just minutes. They must learn how to catch good fish so that
they can continually feed their children. It is not enough that you distribute
some food lasting for only that moment. What they need is a source of
livelihood, that they may earn their living, and earn respect, dignity,
and self-esteem.
So we ask you and the world to help us make this a reality.
We welcome donation in kind, whether 2nd hand or brand new, or much better,
in cash, to be able to set up the TWEP-IT Shop.
The squeezed budget (edited Oct. 2004) that we need is PhP2,074,000 (US$37,708)
to run for 12 months. It covers all expenses like equipment and furniture,
rental, utilities, wages and commissions, and supplies.
There are six (6) modules: Operating System, Typing Tutor, MS Office
(Word and Excel), Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Photoshop, and Basic HTML.
We can handle 14 students per class for a total of 420 students in 12 months.
(We have actually 455 family-beneficiaries in our master list.
That automatically means 455 mothers in record. Add to them female children
18 and over who are still single.)
Equipment and furniture are listed below just in case you have one, some,
or all, that you can spare, second hand or brand new, we will greatly appreciate
your donation. (Computers are basically PCs but Macs are welcome.
We are currently using 1 donated iBook G3 300MHz.)
Below is a table of what we need. It will be updated as donations arrive so
everyone may know which among the following were already given and which
are still needed to avoid overflow of some yet lack of others (i.e.,
10 units fax machine and 1 unit PC).
